Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27x56 Review

In this review, I will be talking about the Vortex Razor HD Gen ii 4.5-27×56 mm rifle scope. This one is one of the many variants in the Razor HD Gen ii range.

Optics

If you are an avid firearm enthusiast then you already know of the popularity of Vortex optics. The Vortex Razor HD Gen ii 4.5-2.7×46 is one of the most popular ones. Apart from its durability and everything that is synonymous with Vortex, comes the optic. Now this scope has some of the finest, most fantastic glass clarity. When you are investing in a scope, you obviously are looking for a lifelike image. This device has tier 1 glass. All the reviews on this scope hint to exceptional clarity and glass.

The product comes with the option of two reticles: EBR- 7C reticle and Horus Tremor 3. The EBR – 7C is certainly a reticle upgrade from the previous EBR- 2C reticle. The EBR- 7C reticle has been designed in a manner to maximize far-ranging and shooting. This reticle can also be used to gauge holdovers, range and corrections. In this reticle what you will notice is that in the centre crosshair on the holdovers numbers are given.

These actual numbers of the MOA are on the outside of the crosshair Christmas tree. Unlike, the EBR- 2C reticle which has it on the inside. The EBR – 7C reticle is excellent and has everything you need. It also offers a huge level of functionality. The Horus Tremor 3 reticle has been engineered in a way to increase the speed, precision and accuracy of your aim. This reticle is used in a variety of rifles and by a variety of official service organizations. Like the EBR- 7C reticle, this reticle also has a multitude of functions.

The reticles are etched in the First Focal Plane (FFP), meaning that the reticle holding your aim keeps moving with magnification. This can be especially useful in scopes like this that offer a wide array of uses and it’s perfect for everyone out there. With the two reticles and FFP, you also get a 50 mm objective lens. The lenses are obviously multi-coated, as per Vortex quality standards. Now, a larger objective means that you get higher levels of light transmission in the tube. In spite of this, you get clean edges.

The reticles are also illuminated. You get 11 illumination settings with ‘off’ clicks in the middle. However, the illumination is not daytime bright but is very evenly lit. No part of the reticle in not illuminated. The illumination is great when you are using the rifle scope in low light as it illuminates everything on the reticle.

Magnification & Range

The magnification on this scope is a variable one. From 4.5x zoom to 27x zoom, offering you a whole range of magnification. As I said before, the scope has been engineered in a way to give you a whole range of features, no matter what your usage. You get the vortex zeroing tool which is very useful for zeroing in on your game.

Vortex Razor HD Gen ii 4.5- 27×56, even at 27x gives you perfect edge to edge clarity. There is no absolutely any tunneling in the glass. The eye box is very forgiving if you are coming from something like the Burris XTR 2 riflescope. The scope gives you an exceptional 1200 -1 300 yards of range. Throughout magnifications and range, the scope holds clarity. This is a typical long-range scope and is best for shooting.

Adjustable

Talking about the adjustments on this scope, they are smooth, precise and tactical. Right off the bat, I would like to mention that the scope has locking turrets. This means once you lock the turrets after adjusting them, they won’t move. So you can go ahead and sling the rifle on your back without worrying about accidentally changing your settings. This is done by the zero stop setup on the turrets. Once you lock your turrets down, you have no reason to fear of the moving. You just have to lift the adjustment knobs, move them to the desired position and pop them back down. It is as simple as that.

The Vortex Razor HD Gen ii turrets give you nice and crisp clicks. They are not difficult to adjust. If you need to make quick adjustments, just pop back down and you are good to go, as fast as that. Let’s briefly get into the illumination adjustments. Illumination for the reticle is on the left side.

The parallax adjustment is also on the same side. The parallax settings are from 32 yards to infinity. The illumination setting have 11 brightness graduations and ‘off’ clicks in between each. The numbers on the parallax settings are for distances. These are pretty close. You get a bubble level adjuster to gauge whether your scope and rifle are aligned well.

The scope also has I Tec turrets making them even more easier to adjust and lock. Interestingly enough, the illumination adjustments are also lockable. This has been a very well thought out decision on Vortex’s side. As I mentioned before, it has zero stop and also, the ability to just lock them down easily. The turrets have a super simple design. The elevation adjustment is at 28.5 MRAD.

The windage adjustment is at 10 MRAD. Overall, the elevation and windage are pretty good. The Vortex 4.5-27×56 Razor HD Gen ii rifle scope has tactical turrets with knurling on the sides. This makes it easier for you to grab them and move them around. They give you positive clicks and virtually no mush at all. The circumference of the Vortex Razor HD turrets are perfect for fast movements.

User Friendliness

The Vortex Razor HD Gen ii 4.5 27 56 is a well built, tactical scope. The overall quality is top-notch and is super robust. Vortex’s quality control with the Razor HD Gen ii line has been superb. Exceptional build quality and exceptional performance. Beginning with the build, the scope has been constructed out of a single slab of aircraft-grade aluminium. This already makes the pretty durable. On top of this, it is filled with argon gas and multicoated with paint. The 30 mm tube on this scope is also anodized. This makes the scope highly durable, waterproof, fog proof and shockproof. The lenses are all multicoated and made out of Tier 1 glass. You also get a 3.7 inches eye relief.

With the exceptional build quality and features, the scope can also get a little heavy. The device weighs a whopping 48.5 oz. Now for users who are accustomed to shooting with lighter scopes, this can get a little cumbersome. So I would say that the weight can be a potential drawback depending on your usage. If you need a lightweight hunting rig, this scope is not going to be conducive for that. You can look at other Vortex models like the Diamondback 3-9×40 mm or the Crossfire ii 1-4×24 mm.

With this device you also get a sunshade, lens glove and dust caps. The instruction manual on this device is very useful and definitely one that you should quickly skim through before taking it out on the field. Now, it is a well-known fact that Vortex has some of the best customer service.

On top of that, you also get the famous Vortex VIP warranty. By this warranty, your Vortex Razor HD Gen ii 4.5 17 56 is covered from all damages and factory-build defects. You can contact their customer service agent and in no time you will have your product looked after. Some customers also say that the product quality is sometimes better than it was before. This warranty is also transferrable so if you were to sell this Razor HD Gen ii model you should be good to go. The quality of this device is pretty noteworthy, with this you also get some awesome service. It’s a sweet deal!

Compatibility

The Vortex Razor HD Gen ii 4.5 27 56 is essentially best fitted for long range shooting. So if you are somebody who is into this, this scope is for you. As i said before the weight can be a slight drawback for some customers, but there are others who prefer the bulk as it helps them focus and hold aim easier. For most precision long range PRS shooters, the weight won’t be much of an issue. You can use this device on a number of long range riles, AR rifles, precision rifles and ever shotguns. The tec turrets are certainly a good fit for all.
