Elcan SpecterDR Review- You Can’t Go Wrong With A Military Sight.

If you’re a hunter that’s always on the lookout to upgrade himself with some military grade weapons, you’ve definitely heard of Elcan. Let’s check out Elcan SpecterDR Review but before that let me tell you why elcan. Even though they don’t have a wide collection to choose from, the reasons to go for an Elcan device are plenty. Established in 1848, the optical brand has over 160 years of experience in the field. Their products have served every possible purpose- whether it’s medical, security, entertainment or defense.

They have evolved to become some of the best optics in the world. The company stems from Germany, a country that is synonymous with precision. Moreover, it is now owned by Raytheon, one of the biggest and most trusted defense contractors in the whole world. If you’re looking for tried and tested quality and performance, you’ve come to the right place.

The Elcan Specterdr 1-4x Sight has been the choice of the United States Special Ops for multiple elite SpecOps missions. It is a sight that can take down anything imaginable and has a legacy of protecting thousands. Whether you’re looking for quick close range combat or something a little further, the SpecterDr will have your back. It prides itself in being able to switch between these modes in the bat of an eyelid. Speed, accuracy and reliability – let’s dig a little deeper into this absolute beast.

In a hurry? Don’t worry. Here’s a quick overview of the features.

It allows you to switch from close 1x combat to mid-range 4x shooting in seconds. All adjustments are efficient and user-friendly. You will be able to sight in and hold your zero effortlessly. Overall, it’s a beautifully constructed device with long eye relief and an unbelievable battery.

Elcan SpecterDR Dual Role 1-4x Optical Sight

Elcan SpecterDR Dual Role 1-4x Optical Sight - elcan specterdr review

There are 3 different models of the Elcan SpecterDR available. There are two color options- black and dark earth. The BDC reticle options are CX5395 and CX5396 for your 5.56 NATO or 7.62 NATO respectively.

Optics

Close range or long range, optical clarity is paramount. Elcan knows this fact better than anyone else. The 32 mm objective lens provides a wide and comfortable field of view. The sight’s lens coatings make sure that reflection and glare are never problems you have to deal with. The images that this device provides are crisp and superb. After all, I would expect nothing less from a military grade sight.

Our reticle here is a ballistic crosshair reticle that is thick near the edges and thin downs towards the center for good focus. The bullet drop compensation makes working with your 5.56/7.62 a whole lot easier and pleasurable. It also has a long-lasting red LED illumination that comes with 5 brightness settings to suit your comfort. You can take this sight out in the darkest of nights as well as in broad, bright daylight- rest assured that the dot will remain clean and accurate. There is an additional option to illuminate the whole reticle to aid your eye sight. The reticle is visible and usable even without the illumination on it. I have no complaints in this area.

Magnification and Range

The Elcan SpecterDR comes with a close combat 1-4x magnification. What’s amazing is that it’s almost like having two optical devices in one since you can switch from the 4x to the 1x CQB easily with the throw lever. The lever is well constructed, solid and easy to use.

You can switch between these settings quite quickly, just as promised. In my experience, the clarity remained consistent at both, the 1 x and 4 x setting.

Adjustments

The windage and elevation turrets are MOA (minute of angle) based. You get half an inch with every click, which is quite comfortable considering the magnification range. They were quite crisp in my experience and didn’t cause any problems. We already spoke about the quick and trouble-free magnification lever in the previous section.

The parallax for this scope is fixed. The focus range goes from 20 meters to infinity. Even though I always prefer if my expensive scopes come with an adjustable objective, I had absolutely no problems with this one. You don’t actually need this feature for the 1-4 x magnification.

As far as sighting in goes, I had a great experience. You will be able to focus and acquire your target with unmatched speed. This easy zero is also held well. Elcan’s Specterdr is one of the toughest and most recoil-resistant products I have ever seen – it could effortlessly hold zero even through a bomb blast.

User friendliness

I absolutely have to talk about the sturdiness and durability of the Elcan SpecterDR first. It is constructed ruggedly keeping extreme conditions in mind. This is one of the strongest devices I have ever held and it can definitely take any amount of shock and punishment. Add to this its water resistance- the scope can survive under upto 66 feet of water for 2 whole hours! We have a product that can’t be fazed by anything mother nature, or you throw at it.

Another commendable part of this scope is the battery. The Elcan SpecterDR comes with a 600-3000 hour battery life (depending on your use of illumination). If you’re a forgetful hunter like me, this will definitely make you happy. You can shoot continuously for weeks without having your device die on you. This unbelievable battery life has been made possible thanks to clever features like the low profile illumination switch.

The eye relief is more than generous at 7 cm and allows you to shoot with both your eyes open. Size-wise, this Elcan scope is pretty compact. It comes with an ARMS mount that is easy to detach and attach. However, this mount is not adjustable. ( At the time of writing this, Elcan has released a 2nd generation of this mount that is available for purchase.) It also comes with an anti-reflection device.

Now, it is a little heavy at 23 ounces but I feel like this is still a manageable weight. The price is pretty heavy too. You need to shell out for quality that is this good.

Compatibility

You can use your Elcon SpecterDR 1-4x sight with image intensified as well as thermal clip-on devices. Just pay attention while choosing between the 5.56 and 7.62 for your particular weapon, ammo and purpose.

FAQ

What is the range of the Elcan Specter DR?

Thanks to the great optics, the 4x magnification of this scope can take you as far as 600 meters while the 1x is brilliant for close range. Even though the reticle compensates for upto 1000 meters, I would have to say that the effective range of this scope lies between 0-600 meters.

Does this product come with a warranty? If so, what is it?

Yes, this product comes with a limited warranty. It is valid for one year.

What’s the difference between the 5.56 and 7.62 models?

There is no difference, construction wise. Essentially all the features remain the same with the exception of the specially calibrated hash marks on the respective reticles.

Why is this scope so expensive? What am I paying for?

There must be a lot of cheaper scopes on the market with features that are seemingly the same. This might make you question your decision and wonder why you should spend so much on this particular sight when you can just buy the others instead. Well, let me remind you- specs aren’t the only thing that matters. Even if two devices look similar on the surface, there are a host of other important factors that come into play on the field.

Cheaper scopes will not offer the same lens clarity and will be constructed of low quality materials. They will also not be smooth to use and will not last you very long. On the other hand, when you invest in a scope like the Elcan Specter DR, you’re investing in long-lasting quality and clarity. It is better to purchase one scope that will last several years than keep on purchasing low cost scopes that lose their effectiveness every 6 months.

Does this ARMS mount have enough height to prevent interference caused by a front sight?

The ARMS mount that comes included with these Elcan scopes is of the standard AR-15 height. Unfortunately, this means that your front sight might get in the way when you’re at the 1x magnification. However, this issue has a simple fix- using any average picatinny riser will help you get rid of the interference.

Conclusion

Wow, what a sight (literally!). I think it is quite clear why the SpecterDR is a top choice for protectors. I, for one, feel a lot safer knowing that our military is armed with this device. Right from the wide field of view to the dual magnification to the rugged construction, Elcan has managed to tick every box possible with this optic. If I had to choose, my favorite parts would be the illuminated dot reticle and battery life. This product is definitely worth the investment. Do check out this article about NATO ammunitions.

The Elcan SpecterDR 1-4x is a top performer and a reliable companion that will stay by your side for years. I hope that this review has cleared any and all doubts you had about the device and that you are now on your way to a great purchase. If you loved the specs but want to look at a different magnification option, you can check out the SpecterDR 1.5-6x sight.

Until next time!
